Ghana Freedom Party Leader Akua Donkor Passes Away

Akua Donkor, the founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra, though the details of her passing remain undisclosed.

A family member confirmed her death to Citi FM on Tuesday, October 29, noting that she passed on Monday, October 28.

Known for her passionate advocacy for farmers and women’s rights, Akua Donkor was a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics. As the founder of the GFP, she gained public recognition for her bold, outspoken approach to addressing grassroots issues and championing the needs of local communities.

Akua Donkor’s resilience shone through her multiple presidential campaigns, despite facing financial limitations. Listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the 2024 presidential election, her passing closes a significant chapter in Ghana’s political landscape.

Her political journey began as an elected Assemblywoman for Herman, and her first presidential bid came in 2012, when she applied as an independent candidate. However, she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission for not meeting eligibility criteria, a decision she accepted without legal challenge. Instead, she extended her support to Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

In 2016, she faced another setback when her party’s headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, was destroyed by fire, which ultimately led to her disqualification from that year’s presidential race. Akua Donkor’s legacy remains as a unique voice in Ghanaian politics, remembered for her tenacity and unwavering commitment to her ideals.
