Authorities in the Netherlands have detained Ghanaian legislator Kwame Ohene Frimpong at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, Ghana’s Parliament has confirmed.
The MP for Asante Akyem North was reportedly arrested by Dutch officials in connection with an investigation involving the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
People familiar with the matter claim the probe centres on alleged financial offences such as money laundering and romance fraud, involving an estimated $32 million. Neither Dutch authorities nor US officials have formally confirmed the claims.
In a short release, Parliament of Ghana stated that it had received information about the detention and was gathering more facts on the matter. The statement, signed by Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, said the Speaker and parliamentary leaders are engaging Ghana’s embassy in The Hague.
According to Parliament, efforts are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the arrest, including whether any official charges have been brought against the lawmaker and why he travelled to the Netherlands.
Authorities are yet to clarify if Mr Frimpong was on an official assignment or a private trip.
The development has sparked widespread reaction in Ghana, with many demanding more details from both Ghanaian and Dutch officials. Parliament says additional information will be shared when available.
