Ghana set to rebuild economy for sustainable growth and resilience

Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has detailed government plans aimed at restructuring Ghana’s economy to improve its global competitiveness through a transformation strategy centred on innovation, productivity, and value addition.

Addressing participants at the ACI World Congress 2026 on Friday, May 22, 2026, he stated that the government is determined to redesign the country’s economic framework to promote sustainable growth and strengthen long-term resilience.

According to him, the strategy is focused on transitioning the economy from raw material extraction to value-added production, from informality to higher productivity, from economic vulnerability to resilience, and from dependency to greater competitiveness.

Mr. Nyarko Ampem said the broader goal is to position Ghanaian businesses to compete effectively on the global stage while ensuring African capital plays a leading role in financing the continent’s transformation.

He added that government also wants financial markets to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable prosperity over the long term.

The Deputy Finance Minister further explained that the policy direction seeks to create conditions that encourage young people to establish technology-driven businesses instead of relying solely on traditional employment opportunities.

He noted that the vision also includes building a more integrated and export-driven agricultural sector, strengthening local industries to compete internationally, and expanding digital financial inclusion across the country.
