Government pays off outstanding UK scholarship debts

The Ghana Scholarships Authority has confirmed that government has disbursed first-quarter funding to the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom to start settling outstanding scholarship arrears owed to Ghanaian students.

This move forms part of measures to address delays in the payment of stipends and tuition fees that have affected several Ghanaian students enrolled in various universities across the UK.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 16, and signed by the Director-General of the Ghana Scholarships Authority, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, the Authority acknowledged the concerns of affected students and expressed regret over the disruption caused, assuring that corrective steps are underway to normalise payments.

The statement added that the released funds are meant to cover financial obligations of beneficiaries and ease pressure on students to ensure their academic progress is not interrupted.

It further indicated that the money will go through the required administrative and public financial management procedures before being credited to students’ accounts as quickly as possible.

According to the Authority, government remains dedicated to supporting Ghanaian students abroad and is collaborating with relevant institutions to expedite the clearance of all outstanding payments while preventing future delays.

It also reiterated its commitment to improving internal systems to enhance efficiency in scholarship management and ensure more timely disbursement of funds going forward.

Beneficiaries were urged to stay calm and focus on their studies as efforts continue to resolve all pending financial obligations.
