India set to purchase up to $80 billion in Boeing aircraft after U.S. trade deal

India is preparing to place aircraft orders with Boeing valued at up to $80 billion, signalling a major step in expanding trade relations with the United States, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said.

The minister explained that while formal orders have yet to be issued, India’s demand for planes alone could approach $80 billion. Adding engines and spare parts could push total imports from U.S. aerospace manufacturers above $100 billion.

This announcement comes amid broader discussions about increasing bilateral trade, with India exploring the potential to purchase hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of U.S. goods over the next five years. However, officials clarified that no legally binding investment commitments have been made as part of the current trade arrangement.

The planned aircraft purchases are part of a wider agreement expected to be formalised soon. A preliminary statement outlining the first stage of the deal is anticipated in the coming days, with a complete agreement scheduled for mid-March. The pact also includes tariff adjustments on Indian and U.S. goods, though the full details remain under review.

The development occurs while Boeing faces ongoing litigation related to last year’s Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which killed 241 of 242 passengers, with families claiming defects in aircraft components contributed to the disaster.

Experts have cautioned that while India’s imports from the U.S. are likely to rise, the ambitious goal of purchasing $500 billion in goods over five years may be difficult to achieve, given existing trade volumes and past fluctuations in U.S. trade policy.

India’s overall imports reached $720 billion in the 2025 financial year, with a trade deficit of $94 billion, including roughly $45 billion in goods sourced from the United States.
