Ivory Coast: Political Parties Begin Preparations for 2025 Presidential Election

Former Ivorian Prime Minister Pascal Affi N’Guessan was announced on Saturday as the presidential candidate for the Popular Ivorian Front (FPI) in the 2025 election.

At a congress held in Yamoussoukro, the country’s capital, N’Guessan was re-elected as FPI president, securing 99.34% of the votes from approximately 4,500 delegates.

The FPI, founded by former President Laurent Gbagbo, was led by N’Guessan during Gbagbo’s imprisonment in The Hague on war crimes charges.

N’Guessan previously contested the presidency in 2015 and 2020, both times losing to incumbent Alassane Ouattara. After the 2020 election, he disputed the results and was briefly detained on allegations of running a “parallel government.”

Among N’Guessan’s central campaign pledges are the abolition of the senate and the reinstatement of presidential term limits.

Ouattara, whose controversial re-election raised concerns, has not yet confirmed if he will pursue a fourth term.
