Former Greek President Karolos Papoulias died on Sunday at the age of 92, according to the presidency.

Papoulias served two terms between 2005 and 2015.Papoulias was a high-ranking member of the socialist PASOK party and a close colleague of its late leader and former Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, who served as foreign minister from 1985 to 1989 and 1993 to 1996.

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou praised Papoulias for his resistance to Nazi occupation during WWII and the military junta that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. “His participation in the national resistance and the anti-dictatorship struggle…reflected his continuous devotion to the ideals of freedom and justice, which he defended throughout his life,” Sakellaropoulou said in a statement.
