Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has called on Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin to demonstrate strong leadership in resolving the ongoing parliamentary impasse over majority seating arrangements.
Kufuor expressed disappointment with the situation, describing it as an “embarrassing” standoff that risks tarnishing Bagbin’s distinguished career.
The dispute arose after the Supreme Court stayed Bagbin’s ruling that declared four parliamentary seats vacant, a decision that shifted the balance of power toward the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, NDC MPs continue to claim a majority in Parliament, occupying seats traditionally held by New Patriotic Party (NPP) members.
In response, NPP MPs, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, have refrained from entering the chamber to avoid potential confrontations, effectively stalling parliamentary proceedings and highlighting the tense standoff.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Kufuor emphasized the critical role of Speaker Bagbin in fostering stability and order in the House. He cautioned that the current situation, if unresolved, could damage Bagbin’s reputation and overshadow his contributions to Ghana’s political legacy.
“I urge the Speaker of Parliament to step up and show leadership. What’s happening in Parliament is embarrassing and could mar his remarkable record,” Kufuor stated.
