Mahama Ayariga’s Bawku residence allegedly set on fire.

Tensions in Bawku escalated further on Thursday, April 10, 2025, after unidentified youth vandalized and partially set fire to the residence of Bawku Central MP and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga.

The incident occurred amid ongoing unrest linked to the town’s long-standing chieftaincy dispute.

Security sources confirmed that the military has since intervened and taken strategic positions around the area to prevent further attacks.

This latest act of violence follows Wednesday’s deadly clash between youth groups and law enforcement, which left one person dead, and several others injured.

The violence reportedly began when youth from one faction ordered market women from a rival group to vacate the area, leading to a confrontation with police and an eventual crossfire.

The unrest also saw the burning of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander’s residence and other police facilities.

Authorities have ramped up patrols to stabilize the area, but the atmosphere remains tense.
