Mahama travels to South Korea for ship-naming ceremony at major shipyard

During a working visit to South Korea this week, John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, is expected to officiate the naming ceremony of a newly constructed vessel at one of the world’s largest shipyards, an event that underscores the strengthening maritime and economic cooperation between the two nations.

John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, is scheduled to visit South Korea from March 10 to March 14, where he will take part in a ship-naming ceremony at the Ulsan shipyard operated by Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The South Korean firm ranks among the world’s leading shipbuilders and manufactures some of the largest cargo vessels, oil tankers and offshore platforms used in global trade and energy transportation.

Ship-naming ceremonies are a long-standing maritime custom held before a vessel begins its service. The event formally introduces the ship and is traditionally believed to bring good luck and safe journeys. Such occasions are often attended by prominent public officials or representatives of the ship’s owners.

Located in the city of Ulsan, Hyundai’s shipyard is considered the largest shipbuilding complex in the world. The facility constructs vessels for international shipping companies, oil producers and energy firms, making it a major hub within the global maritime industry.

Beyond the ceremony, Mahama’s visit is also expected to focus on expanding trade and investment relations between Ghana and South Korea.

During the trip, he is set to hold bilateral discussions with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and meet the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly, Woo Won-shik.

The Ghanaian leader will also deliver remarks at a conferment event at Yonsei University and engage with Ghanaian students and professionals residing in South Korea. In addition, a dinner meeting with business leaders and chief executives has been scheduled to highlight investment opportunities in Ghana.

The trip forms part of Ghana’s broader effort to strengthen economic cooperation with major Asian industrial economies, particularly in areas such as energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and maritime services.
