Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, the Second Deputy Majority Whip, has expressed optimism that the Supreme Court will resolve the ongoing dispute over Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant before the next session of Parliament.
Djornobuah hopes that the court’s ruling will prevent a recurrence of the previous session’s chaos, during which both New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs claimed majority status and occupied the majority side, leading to an NPP boycott.
The dispute originated when the Speaker declared the seats vacant, a decision stayed by the Supreme Court. Despite this, the NDC maintains that they hold the majority in Parliament.
The Majority argues that the ongoing suspension of parliamentary sittings due to this conflict is hindering important government business, which has led them to call for a recall of Parliament.
In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News, the Sefwi-Akontombra MP expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would soon make a final determination on the vacant seats, potentially easing tensions in Parliament.
“The court process will start from Friday, and based on the Supreme Court’s order, it required the Speaker and Parliament as an institution to respond to the directive.
“We believe that before the 7-day period expires, the court will deliver justice regarding the NDC’s claims. While we cannot rush the court, we hope they will address the matter promptly,” Djornobuah said.
