Mid-year budget: Govt to pay laid off workers temporary incomes

The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta is set to announce a temporary financial relief programme for persons who lost their jobs as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).


To be known as the National Unemployment Insurance Scheme, the initiative is to be a temporary income and will be paid to workers who were laid off by their employers following the emergence of the pandemic.

Graphic Online understands that the jobless insurance scheme is one the remedial measures that the government will use to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on lives and society. It is believed that the Minister will provide the details on the qualification criteria, the amount to be paid per person and the duration of the scheme when he presents the mid-year budget review to Parliament later today.
