Mortuary workers in Ghana are set to begin a nationwide strike on Thursday, September 26, 2024, in response to poor working conditions and unresolved grievances.
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has issued a formal notice to the government, accusing it of neglecting their demands.
In a statement dated Tuesday, September 17, MOWAG General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan stressed that the strike is a last resort after multiple failed attempts to resolve their concerns.
Workers have raised issues such as inadequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), leaving them vulnerable to diseases and other hazards. They also cite unpaid salary arrears dating back to 2020 and the government’s failure to provide financial clearance for the recruitment of 500 additional mortuary workers.
MOWAG is further demanding the payment of the COVID-19 bonus promised by the President, which they have yet to receive.
The statement also highlighted the urgent need for action, noting that 16 mortuary workers have died within a year due to hazardous working conditions.
Until their demands are addressed, members will remain at home, and all mortuaries nationwide will be closed.
