The National Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will meet today, July 4, with the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to discuss his choice of running mate for the December 7 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia is expected to justify his selection of Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, as his running mate.
Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP’s National Organiser, explained to Citi News that today’s meeting adheres to the party’s constitution.
“Our party’s constitution, Article 13, clearly states that the nominee for running mate must be presented in consultation with the National Council. So Dr. Bawumia will present the MP for Manhyia South and Minister for Energy, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, as his running mate,” Boakye said.
On June 25, Bawumia held a crucial meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to discuss his choice of Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh. Following this, he formally informed the NPP leadership and the Parliament’s Majority caucus.
The nomination of the Manhyia South MP has sparked mixed reactions within and outside the NPP. While some praise the choice, there has been opposition as well.
