National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has called for tangible actions to accompany the Peace Pact signed ahead of the 2024 general elections, emphasizing that mere verbal commitments are insufficient.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Accra on November 28, 2024, Mahama highlighted mistrust and insincerity among stakeholders as significant threats to peaceful elections. He expressed concerns about past incidents, such as the 2020 general elections and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, which he said cast doubt on the sincerity of peace commitments.
The former president urged political actors to align their actions with their pledges, stressing the need for genuine efforts to uphold Ghana’s status as a peaceful democracy.
“It is commendable for us to commit to peace and articulate noble intentions. However, these efforts will be meaningless if mistrust and insincerity persist. Mistrust arises when words are not matched by actions, particularly from those in authority,” Mahama remarked.
He added, “There is a risk that this well-intentioned Peace Pact could fail unless backed by concrete measures from stakeholders and the government to ensure peace. Incidents from the last election and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election raise legitimate concerns about the genuineness of some commitments made today.”
