Police and Military Pledge to Restore Security in Bawku Amid Rising Tensions

In response to escalating violence in Bawku and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces have assured the public of intensified security measures to restore stability.

Following recent clashes in Bawku sparked by the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre and an ambush that tragically killed eight travelers, security forces are bolstering their presence across affected areas. The violence, rooted in longstanding chieftaincy disputes, flared up when Abagre, who had been in exile, reentered Bawku, sparking renewed tensions and deadly confrontations.

The conflict spilled over onto the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, where armed groups set up roadblocks near Gbimsi, targeting travelers from the Bawku area. The highway attacks led to eight fatalities and significant vehicle damage.

In an official statement, security agencies confirmed the deployment of joint police and military forces to secure Bawku and the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, emphasizing efforts to restore law and order and ensure safe travel.

Authorities reiterated that security personnel are stationed along the highway to prevent further incidents, secure safe passage, and manage traffic flow. They urged the public to remain calm, affirming their commitment to restoring peace and protecting lives in Bawku and along this crucial route.
