Police question EC Officer over unauthorised transport of election materials

The Electoral Commission (EC) has addressed an incident involving the District Electoral Officer (DEO) for Afadjato South in the Volta Region, who was questioned by the Police on Thursday, December 5, for transporting election materials in a private vehicle without the required Police escort.

In a statement signed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, the EC confirmed that the Police have taken custody of the materials. The Commission reiterated its policy that all election materials must be transported in official vehicles and accompanied by a Police escort when necessary.

The EC announced that it would conduct internal investigations into the breach while fully cooperating with the Police in their ongoing inquiry.

Despite the protocol violation, the Commission reassured the public that the integrity of the elections in the Afadjato South Constituency remains intact.

RE: POLICE QUESTIONS EC OFFICER OF AFADJATO SOUTH DISTRICT OVER ELECTION MATERIALS IN PRIVATE VEHICLE

The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the general public that officers of the Ghana Police Service questioned the Commission’s District Electoral Officer (DEO) for Afadjato South in the Volta Region for transporting election materials in a private vehicle without Police escort. The Police have since taken custody of the items.

The Commission’s policy requires all election materials to be transported in official vehicles with Police escort where necessary. The Commission will conduct its own internal investigations and continue to cooperate with the Police.

We wish to assure the public that, while the officer breached EC policy, this incident will not compromise the integrity of the elections in the Afadjato South Constituency.
