President Bola Tinubu has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers and pledged to review the national minimum wage law every three years. This decision followed a meeting between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
Present at the meeting were the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajero; and TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in a statement on X.
“President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years. He also pledged to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals in paying the minimum wage,” Onanuga stated.
The meeting was the second between President Tinubu and the labor leaders within a week. Onanuga noted that the labor leaders praised President Tinubu’s “fatherly gesture.” Additionally, the President vowed to use his executive discretion to address the outstanding four months’ salaries owed to university unions.
