Professor Alidu Seidu Appointed Executive Secretary of Water Resources Commission

The Government has appointed Professor Seidu Mahama Alidu as the new Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission.

This strategic appointment comes at a time when sustainable water governance is critical to Ghana’s environmental and developmental agenda.

Prof. Alidu is currently an Associate Professor and the Head of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana.

He brings a wealth of academic, policy, and governance experience to his new role, making him well-positioned to lead the Commission’s efforts in managing Ghana’s water resources effectively.

He was a Donahue Institute Scholar on United States’ Political Thought at the University of Massachusetts in 2014 and served as a fellow at the Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), where he focused on Parliaments and Democracy in Africa.

Prof. Alidu has collaborated with a wide range of policy think tanks and international institutions, including the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR) in Nairobi, the Centre for International Development Issues Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Sussex.

His work has also involved the Institute for Democratic Governance, Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung, United Nations Development Programme, Varieties of Democracy Project (University of Gothenburg, Sweden), Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, German-African Governance Partnership, and the Social Science Research Council in New York.

In academia, he is a co-editor of the African Yearbook and serves on the editorial board of the African Journal of Defence, Security and Strategy. He is also the lead editor of two key volumes: Contemporary Issues in Ghana: Economy, Development, Society and Gender and Contemporary Issues in Ghana: Politics, Security, Conflicts and Identity. In addition, he is co-editor of two forthcoming books—Political Institutions and Communication Perspectives in Ghana: Three Decades of Ghana’s Fourth Republic and Public Sector Management and Economic Governance in Ghana: Three Decades of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, both to be published by Palgrave Macmillan.

Prof. Alidu’s scholarly work has appeared in prestigious journals including African Affairs, Ghana Studies, Journal of African Political Economy and Development, Contemporary Journal of African Development, Peace Review, Criminal Justice Studies, and the Review of Transitional Justice, among others.

His appointment is expected to bring a multidimensional, research-informed approach to water resource policy and governance in Ghana.
