Reshuffle in South Sudan: Kiir Fires Vice Presidents in the Most Recent Purge

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has removed from office two of his vice-presidents, marking a significant shift in the country’s leadership as he continues to reshuffle his administration.

Vice President for Economic Cluster James Wani Igga and his counterpart for Services Cluster Hussein Abdelbagi have been replaced by Ms Josephine Lagu and Mr Benjamin Bol Mel, respectively.

Ms Lagu was previously the minister of Agriculture, while Mr Bol was previously the Presidential Envoy for Special Programmes.

Mr Wani Igga has been appointed Secretary General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), replacing Mr. Peter Lam Both.

He also removed Akech Tong, the director-general of National Security, from his post.

From the SPLM-In Opposition, President Kiir sacked Health Minister Awel Deng and Western Equatoria State Governor Alfred Futuyo Karaba. No replacements have been named. While no official reasons were given for the government reshuffle, President Kiir cited his constitutional authority to make leadership changes.
