Russia issues official response to claims of recruiting Nigerians for the Ukraine conflict.

The Russian ambassador to Nigeria has denied allegations that Nigerians are being recruited to participate in the Ukraine war, asserting that there is no government-sponsored initiative involving Nigerian citizens.

Under mounting speculation about Nigerian recruitment for the Ukraine conflict, Russia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyelyshev, clarified on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, that no state-sanctioned programme exists targeting Nigerian citizens.

During a briefing in Abuja, Podyelyshev called the reports “unfounded” and emphasized that any attempts by individuals to recruit Nigerians occur independently of the Russian government. He added that credible cases would be referred to Russian law enforcement for investigation.

The ambassador also detailed ongoing military-technical collaboration between the two countries, including training for Nigerian personnel and potential delivery of Russian equipment. While some projects are already active, others are being reviewed in accordance with Nigeria’s priorities.

Highlighting Nigeria’s strategic significance, Podyelyshev described the country as a key partner for Russia in West Africa, essential for regional stability and broader diplomatic engagement.

He reiterated Moscow’s commitment to a multipolar international order, respect for national sovereignty, and opposition to unilateral interference. The ambassador also stressed support for African-led approaches to the continent’s challenges without outside intrusion.

In addition to security ties, discussions included economic, scientific, and educational cooperation. Plans are underway to set up a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology in Nigeria, as well as to expand scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students in Russia.

Podyelyshev concluded that both nations remain focused on fostering a long-term partnership spanning trade, security, education, and international diplomatic coordination.
