Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has called for Parliament to reconvene on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM, with the session scheduled to take place at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre. Lawmakers will return to address important discussions that have been delayed for several weeks.
This decision comes after a prolonged impasse sparked by Speaker Bagbin’s ruling to declare the seats for Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West vacant. The declaration met with strong opposition from the Majority caucus, who argued that it compromised their representation.
The situation saw a major shift when the Supreme Court issued a stay on the Speaker’s declaration following a writ filed by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, temporarily reinstating the contested seats and underscoring the ongoing tension between the Majority and Minority factions.
Tensions further escalated when the Speaker adjourned Parliament after the Minority caucus, capitalizing on their numerical advantage, took control of the Majority side of the House. This unprecedented move raised concerns about Parliament’s operational stability and the urgent need for resolution.
In response, the Majority caucus initiated the recall of Parliament, citing the need to resume legislative activities to ensure critical policies and programs are not delayed.
