Members of Ghana’s National African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Governing Council were officially sworn into office in Accra on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, by President John Dramani Mahama.

Under the African Peer Review Mechanism, Ghana’s next assessment will be guided by a newly constituted Governing Council tasked with supervising the country’s participation in the process.
Addressing the gathering, John Dramani Mahama underscored the importance of the APRM as a framework for measuring governance progress and informing policy reforms. He noted that Ghana is prepared to take part in the second-generation peer review slated for next week, to be held on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He explained that the mechanism offers a structured way to examine governance systems while advancing reforms that promote accountability and democratic practice, stressing Ghana’s readiness to engage fully in the exercise.
Leadership of the Council rests with Professor Akua Kuenyehia, who, in brief remarks, expressed appreciation to the President and pledged that the Council would carry out its duties with transparency and respect for institutional independence.
Serving alongside her on the Council are Dr. Joseph Whittal, Chairperson of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Mr. Joseph Obeng, Mr. David Ofosu-Dorte, and Mrs. Cornelia Amoah.
Through its work, the Council is expected to steer Ghana’s engagement in the peer review and support the implementation of governance reforms arising from the assessment.
