UN names ex-Haiti PM Garry Conille as Kenya’s Resident Coordinator

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has named Garry Conille, the former prime minister of Haiti, as the UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, the organization announced on Wednesday.

Conille officially assumed his duties on the same day, according to a UN press statement.

The announcement highlighted that Conille brings more than two decades of experience in international development, humanitarian work, and public administration, along with a strong leadership record across various UN agencies.

At 60 years old, Conille has been part of the United Nations system since 1999, including serving as Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at UNICEF.

He has previously held the position of UN Resident Coordinator in Burundi and later in Jamaica from 2017 to 2022.

In Haiti, Conille initially served as prime minister from 2011 to 2012.

He returned to the role in 2024 under the country’s Transitional Presidential Council, which aimed to restore political stability.

During his second tenure, Conille oversaw the deployment of Kenyan troops to Haiti as part of a UN-mandated mission to address severe gang-related violence and support national security.

Following his departure, business executive Alix Didier Fils-Aimé took over as Haiti’s acting prime minister and continues to hold full executive authority.

In Kenya, Conille is expected to focus on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework and coordinating efforts to support the country’s development goals.
