US House votes to scrap Trump’s tariffs on Canada.

The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to overturn former President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods. In a 219–211 vote, six Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the resolution, which seeks to end the duties Trump imposed last year.

The vote is largely symbolic, as the measure still requires approval from the Senate and Trump’s signature, which is unlikely. Trump, who has imposed multiple tariffs on Canada since his re-election, recently threatened a 100% import tax over Canada’s proposed trade deal with China.

During the House vote, he posted on Truth Social warning that any Republican voting against tariffs would “seriously suffer the consequences come Election time,” and stressed that tariffs provide economic and national security benefits.

The resolution was introduced by Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks, who said Trump “weaponized tariffs” against allies and disrupted the global economy. Meeks noted that the tariffs have hurt U.S.-Canada relations, pushed Canada closer to China, and driven up prices for American consumers.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Trump ally, had attempted to block debate on the measure, but the resolution passed thanks to the six Republican defections alongside near-unanimous Democratic support.

Among the Republicans who crossed party lines was Nebraska Representative Don Bacon, who described the tariffs as a “net negative” for the economy and a significant tax burden on U.S. consumers, manufacturers, and farmers.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where Republicans also hold a majority. Even if it passes, Trump is unlikely to sign it into law. Meanwhile, the tariffs are facing legal challenges, with the U.S. Supreme Court set to rule on the president’s authority to impose them.

Meeks said the resolution on Canada is the first of several aimed at rolling back Trump’s trade policies, including tariffs on Mexico, Brazil, and other global levies. “Our fight doesn’t stop here,” he said in a video posted before the vote.
